This is the final...

Open Source 5x4 Camera Project

This is the final structure for the 3D Printed Front Standard (rotate 90 degrees) and some details for the laser cutting of what will be the lens board holder that slots between the two tall bits of the front standard

Bit of info about this project in my previous post here

Open Source 5x4 Camera Project

So wheels are in motion for a half laser cut half 3D printed 5x4 camera, Idea I have had for a while and it seems to be shaping up quite nicely might even call for its own separate blog.

Idea basically consists of a source file containing Blue prints for the laser cut wood components (ply) and the .STL files for the 3D printed components that all come together to form a 5x4” camera Hopefully I will assemble the Beta camera in the coming months.

The project is open source, I will eventually stick the CAD files on the internet and people can modify them, submit the new camera designs and hopefully create a small community of camera builders. Most universities have laser cutters and 3D printers so this could bring a whole new generation of 5x4 cameras into peoples hands, who knows? im sure I cant be the only product design student who likes LF?

If anyone has any thoughts on this idea please get in touch, input from any photographers, product designers or just creative types would be great!

More results from experimenting with 8x10 colour papere...

More results from experimenting with 8x10 colour papere negatives and using the RA4 Reversal Process, seem to be getting there with the filters but the paper came out really mottled (this might be due to using my bathroom as a makeshift dark room and it not being 100% dark)

Filters were Cibachrome 120Y90M

Rated the paper at ISO 6

I would say im happy with the middle strip, you cant see it in this shitty scan but there are greens in there! finally GREEN! also seems to be infrared trees? anyone got any ideas about that?

130y90m+UV all from cibachrome set

Colour balance is a huge problem with doing this with the first picture looking like a cyanotype! It is however really satisfying to get a big positive one off print straight out of the camera!

Bottom two pictures show how the images look after processing in black and white developer and second image is how they look after being exposed to light and processed in RA4 developer and Blix

Full(ish) Instructions Here

I will have to make a video of the image turning from black and white to colour

Results Of The Sunday Experiment
Now these two images might not...

Results Of The Sunday Experiment

Now these two images might not look like much but they are actually quite cool. They are direct positive prints straight out of the back of an 8x10 large format camera no contact prints, no enlarges, no negative, no inverting and in colour all I did was load some Fuji Crystal Archive Paper into a film holder and Processed it using this procedure these are two test shots from today I did several over all and learnt a few things.

1. As with most paper negatives (are these paper positives now?) You need A lot of light ISO I think is around 25

2. Longer in the B&W dev gives you Blue cast and shorter Green

3. The images are incredibly sharp

I never set out to get perfect picture with this so I wont be using an elaborate system of filters, chemicals, temperatures and timings. I think the top one looks a bit like a LOMO style cross process image and I like that, there is a lot of room in this process for some interesting one off images so will be experimenting a lot more with it hopefully to find a colour balance I like and then the aim is to do some portraits

Sunday Experiment

Going to see if I can make Fuji Crystal Archive 8x10 paper into positives, straight out of the camera. Here is the Process as I understand it.

(Similar to how E6 works)

Step One. Black and White Developer

Step Two. Stop Bath

Step Three. Lights ON and Wash

Step Four. Expose The Paper Negative To Light (It should at this point look like a black and white negative, You are doing a reversal exposure as to eventually produce a colour positive)

(lights on from now until end)

Step Four. RA4 Developer

Step Five. Second Stop Bath

Step Six. Wash

Step Seven. RA4 Blix

Step Eight. Wash

I am not sure if this is going to work, I expect the colours to be hugely shifted to either red or blue from what i have read online. I do however expect to get a one off colour 8x10 print from each shot which is hugely exciting.

Everything I know (or think I know) about this process is from here

If you have any theories or ideas about this process, please comment as there is little information and even less examples of results on the internet

Picture from todays quick go on the 8x10 camera

Picture from todays quick go on the 8x10 camera

Photo time

Photo time

Found these in a shop down the road, hundreds of them all...

Found these in a shop down the road, hundreds of them all detailing how various bits of old french machinery were constructed. dont know what im going to do with them but bought a few anyway.

Photo

I just saw the Lollipop Stick Instant Camera and I think that's amazing!!
